Character Background:
"When He opened the fourth seal,
I heard the fourth living creature say,
'Come and see.'
And I looked, and behold, a pale horse.
And the name of him who sat on it was Death..."
The eldest of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the most powerful by far, the last time he was out and about was when Noah was building a boat as it was stated in the series. He was locked at least 600 feet beneath the surface imprisoned in a box until Lucifer released him after he was freed himself. He has been around since as far back as God came into being and perhaps even older than that. His servitude to Lucifer is completely done by a binding spell that Death happens to despise. This is what prompts him to allow Dean to borrow his ring. He was already aware of what was all planned for opening up Lucifer's Cage and putting Lucifer back inside. With Lucifer back inside, Death would no longer be confined by that silly spell.
This first meeting officially occurred in Two Minutes to Midnight though his presence was more or less made known when Lucifer sacrificed several demons in order to raised Death out of that box in Abandon All Hope...He was casually greeted by Lucifer and presumably sent out to perform whatever bidding was required of him. In Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, he raised several of the dead there that ended up going home and the family members treated them as if they were one of their own again. Something turns with them and they end up killing, basically becoming the sort of zombies one would suspect craving human flesh and all. As he has been shown to be able to resurrect without causing this to happen in the form of retrieving souls, this is likely the result of something done on Lucifer's orders. It is part of the coming Apocalypse after all. There was one main reasoning for this rising of the dead though.
Death ended up giving Karen, Bobby's resurrected wife, a message to deliver to Bobby that he was one of the people getting in Sam's way of saying yes to Lucifer on becoming the vessel he was meant to become. Because of this interference, Death now has his eye on him. It was also here that the first real description of Death on Earth was mentioned by Karen as "so thin-like a skeleton". After she gave Bobby that message, he was forced to kill her once more. By this time, Sam and Dean have already acquired the rings of War and Famine. Crowley of course seeks this opportunity to take advantage of the situation with a certain soul(*coughBobbycough*) to reveal the location of Death in Chicago, the city that will be the origin of what will result in 3 million deaths.
This is where we finally meet Death in the flesh so to speak when Dean tries to approach him from behind with Death's Scythe. This however does not work and, without even looking up, heats up the handle of the scythe so much that Dean has to let it drop to the ground and it is seen in the blink of an eye later right on the table where Death is seated eating pizza. Fast food seems to be a reoccurring theme for him, a sort of guilty pleasure that he happens to enjoy on Earth. It is even used to bribe him unsuccessfully into a better mood in a later episode. Despite the circumstances there, he does compliment what he received.
On top of all of this, the way he talks down to Dean comparing him with a bacteria and nothing more than an annoyance along with a simple cold stare is enough to frighten anybody(as it should). He speaks of how young the planet Earth is and how Lucifer is nothing more than a "bratty child having a tantrum". This will not be the first episode that conveys just how little he thinks of human beings and angels and any other organism that is below him. This is his way of explaining how little he thinks of any plans that are made or how little he thinks of the trials and tribulations of others. Even the Apocalypse really means nothing to him aside from his enslavement to Lucifer.
With Lucifer locked away, he was free to do as he pleased. As he mentioned in Appointment in Samarra, he likes to keep a general order to things in the universe. He allowed Dean to put on his ring to teach him a lesson about consequences. When he is questioned about if that was his original intended purpose instead of actually making that wager for Dean to get back Sam's soul, Death simply feigns it by questioning why he(Dean) would think he would do a thing like that. This also seems to be something he wants to assert in Dean is that every action has a consequence and that he and Sam constantly being brought back upset the order. It is obvious how irritated he is, but he claims they will be useful down the line and he ended up agreeing to getting Sam's soul back.
In Meet The New Boss, Dean, Sam, and Bobby are talking to Crowley about getting a spell to bind Death. Though he gives them the impression that he will not give it to them, Crowley sent it to them later on. When they performed the spell, Death was indeed bound and none too pleased to be back in this position. He is told that they want him to kill Castiel and he very nearly does so after a back and forth of trading barbs with the intended target, the one that happened to be the reason later that the Leviathans were going to be released on Earth. He is utterly calm when Castiel threatens him right back. He is very firm here that Castiel is not God, at least not the one that Death knows. It is mocking when he calls him God and it is mocking still after he is unbound. Though he is angry with being bound, he appears to be more angry that Dean and the others have not been doing such a good job on their own. He even goes so far as to tell them what they need to do and create an eclipse for them to do it.
He definitely does not appreciate those in authority that are unprepared for it, especially the childishness of Lucifer and Castiel. Whether it is through binding or waving around power that the wielder can only dream of truly controlling, it is hastiness with disregard to consequences that irks him. He has an obvious attachment to the natural order of things. Being the creator and boss of the reapers that handle guiding souls is part of that. Without that regulation or those looking to cheat the system, there can only be grave consequences. It is not sympathy that drives him to assist anybody. He even mentions in his last appearance that he should perhaps put his efforts towards a better planet. This seems to be coming down to his dislike of Castiel and his gross display of power.
His assistance is normally bought through a mutual benefit through his dislike of the attitudes of those wishing to claim power. It can be attributed as well to just generally finding this all amusing. He does have a tendency to be a little sarcastic on his own with an ever so slight smile on his face from time to time. It is easy enough to see how much he enjoys putting looks of horror on another's face with just a word, a glance, or his mere presence in the room. It is not even about having an ego. He can literally kill whomever sets foot in front of him if he so desires. For somebody that states he will reap God in the end with a straight face, it is generally wise to not patronize him or say something he will construe as snarky and demeaning.
To sum it all up, it all boils down to he is not afraid of anybody or anything. If something comes along that he has not seen, he will take it in stride. If he needs to spell something out for the other party then he will directly state what the issue is. Feelings will not be spared. He has been around since God has or even before, so he does not feel like he has time to deal with all of the little problems here and there that others might have for him. If he likes your case and it coincides with something that will benefit him then it will likely not be overlooked. He wants to keep a Natural Order with dying and such, but do not piss him off. When he is not reaping, he is eating fast food and likely friending it up with God. You do not go the expanse of his lifetime without being pals with God. If you bring him some food and do not give him a reason to be angry then kudos. Anybody can try and speak with him. He will not turn down a conversation or perhaps even a favor if you may be so bold.
As he stated though: You know you can't cheat Death.
Abilities/Special Powers:
As the eldest Horseman, Death is an immensely powerful being, possessing incalculable power and near-omniscience. He is the most powerful being the Winchesters have encountered and faced, far exceeding all others, even archangels, Leviathan and even the Mother Of All Monsters, the only being known to match his immense power is God.
Memory Manipulation - Death was able to suppress Sam's horrific memories of being in Hell, behind a "wall" at the back of his unconscious mind. It is notable, however, that this is not permanent, and would eventually fall. Castiel was able to "crumble" it, and Sam regained the memory of his time in Lucifer's Cage.
Indestructibility - As a Horseman, and a fundamental, driving force, Death cannot be physically destroyed.
Immortality - He's truly immortal and doesn't age. As such, he is not affected by death, disease, pain or fatigue. He claimed to be the only being to last forever.
Resurrection - As who he is, Death can resurrect anything and anyone he wants, simultaneously. However, he chooses not to as it bends the Natural Order.
Nigh-Omnipotence - He's called a "fly swatter" by the angel Castiel, inferring that everything he reaps, is a "fly" in comparison. Death can do practically anything, from creating a lunar eclipse, to going to Lucifer's Cage, without its key, in a matter of seconds. He made his own scythe turn burning hot, without even looking at it. He is capable of killing anyone or anything in Creation, ranging from humans to archangels. Death has also claimed he will reap God in the end.
Nigh-Omniscience - Having existed alongside God since the beginning of time, Death has an extensive knowledge, including information about the universe, created beings and souls. However, Death is not all knowing as he once admitted that neither he nor God can remember which of them is older.
Teleportation - He can teleport himself anywhere in the universe instantly, although he's not Omnipresent like God is.
Weather Manipulation - Death is able to conjure, create and muster tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, and thunderstorms he even caused the Great Flood. As Lucifer asked him to, he was going to wipe out an entire state with massive weather anomalies, but later decided not to.
Killing Touch - He can kill anything in this manner. When brushed by a mortal, the man died. He was also going to kill Castiel, imbued with 30-40 million souls, this way.
Invisibility - Like his brothers, Death can only be seen when he wants to be seen.
Superhuman Perception - He can tell what something truly was, regardless of how it appeared, or if it is invisible.
Apporting - Death was able summon his scythe to him.
Terrakinesis - Able to make whole areas violenty shake, for instance when he was released, or when he was bound.
Thermokinesis - Caused his scythe to heat up, to make Dean drop it, simply by thinking it.
***I am well aware of how powerful he is and I will always limit something if it needs to be. Even if he is able to do a lot of what is listed, he does to do them because of the Natural Order of things. What happens is just what is supposed to happen with the occasional assistance if it strikes his fancy.
***Abilities that would be considered game breaking will be toned down obviously and there will be a Permissions for any insta-kill/something that would be considered god-modding otherwise.
***It should be noted that he will have his ring, which grants any other being that puts it on the ability to kill with a touch, and his scythe which can cut down essentially any being(and some say including himself, but this is just speculation).
Third-Person Sample:
Admittedly, Death found himself to be quite content with his surroundings. When he first arrived here, he was expecting something else. He was not sure what it was, but his ability to see far enough into the future had been muddled at best. Whatever little planet or dimension he was not basically bound to was beyond what he could have predicted. There was no trap. There was no enslavement of his form. There was only this environment with various other beings here. The most peculiar observation he had discovered was that there were different points in time they all came from. For somebody to be able to perform such a feat had to be something even he had never encountered before.
This, of course, made it all the more irritating. When the one responsible was uncovered, he intended on congratulating them before said irritation was erased permanently. He had seen illusions before. He had witnessed moving into the past and into the future. There were many sights to behold that could only be within a dream. As it was, he was a part of countless worlds and galaxies bacterium such as those trapped here could not even hope to wrap their minds with. Did it matter though when the usual lifespan was not even a blip on his radar? Centuries on centuries...where did the time go?
He had plenty of it since he was essentially going to exist forever even when everything came to an end. It was still remarkable and similarly, yet mildly, infuriating when one altered fate could ruin something that was so perfectly assembled from the start.
"I should expect no less from specimens under a microscope."
At least these specimens knew how to put together an interesting world to be placed in. He could play along he supposed. Every once in a while, he would move throughout the heavens that countless souls had dreamed up and some of them did remind him of this. It was nothing truly sentimental for him. It was simply something to do once being released from his box and being bound to that foolish child. It might be enjoyable enough to partake in food out here in the garden. He might not have to eat anything to survive, but it was difficult to deny how much he enjoyed something greasy every now and then.
It was a real shame that he was not feeling that itch that he would be reaping soon enough. It would come though. It always would. That was why it was so important to have patience. It came in an abundance for him though he could think of one particular germ that just could not stop pushing the luck given to it. It was absolutely flabbergasting to even consider the idea of how Dean managed to get through a day without requiring Death to pull a soul for him and binding him to kill that false God. He even assisted in averting the Apocalypse for him. Perhaps he was losing his touch if he was not putting enough fear into his heart over what he kept asking of him.
The edges of his lips quirked into a faint smile. He could not remember a time since the earlier years of witnessing God's earlier work when he was so intrigued to wait and see what happened next. Even the smallest of vermin could give him something to reflect on. Whether those fools ended up dying or not, he did appreciate a good show despite it not being nearly as amusing to him as an entire world being created...though even that tended to get old after a millennium or two.
But who was he to argue?
First-Person Sample:
[Since Death is unaccustomed to hiding himself for fear of anything or anybody in existence, he does little to care about whether his face appears on this device.]
Well well...this is quite the predicament. I wonder who I have to thank for this little excursion.
[Irritation is evident on his face as he sits there a moment and gives a small shake of his head.]
As I told the last that did something against my will, this is not going to end well. Whatever spell or elaborate little illusion this is, it will have a weakness. You will find that my leniency is stretched thin. If this is about a deal then I implore you to listen to me very carefully.
[His dark eyes center on the screen, not an ounce of amusement evident there.]
There is not a thing you can get out of me. The only conclusion to any of this is that I may have to make an exception for keeping the Natural Order. I did give a warning to another for forcing me to do something against my will.
Though really...
[He leans back in his chair.]
Showing yourself or not, this place does have a certain charm I suppose. Perhaps an explanation is in order.
